BROWNIE'S BLOG: The latest from Perth

07-Jan-2013

It is with a touch of sadness that I wish you all a Happy New Year from Perth. As you will all be aware it has been a sad couple of weeks for cricket, and in particular cricket in Sussex. With the passing of Tony Greig and Christopher Martin-Jenkins, the game has lost two great characters and two great commentators. I have been listening to Tony Greig's commentary since I can remember and his distinctive voice, sense of humour and great personality will be missed when watching and listening to Channel 9's coverage of the Ashes. It was the passing of Christopher Martin-Jenkins though that brought sadness on a more personal level as I had the pleasure of meeting one of cricket's finest journalists, and of course playing cricket alongside Robin. My thoughts are with Robin at this tragic time, and all of his family back in the UK.

I hope everybody has been wintering well. We have just enjoyed a few days off over the Christmas period, with cricket making way for the festive season. It is a slightly odd experience enjoying roast turkey in 38 degree heat having spent the morning at the beach, but a very enjoyable one all the same!

Before Christmas, Melville enjoyed a very successful run which sees us in Finals Day of the Twenty20 competition, well positioned to qualify for the latter stages of the One Day Tournament, and sitting Second in the Two-Day League. I'm really pleased to have contributed positively in each competition and my form running into Christmas was good, so hopefully I'll be able to continue that through January and February. The cricket is very competitive here and I'm really enjoying the challenge of new conditions and the added responsibility of being an overseas player.

Off the field I seem to have fitted in well to my club, especially as I have another nickname to add to my collection. I'm assuming Hampshire's Sean Terry and former Middlesex batsmen Tom Scollay aren't calling me Ed Sheeran in relation to my singing skills, but perhaps more due to the tinge of orange in my hair! I'm undecided personally.

I'm looking forward to stepping up my training routine in January, and I have some good coaches to work with on a few areas of my game which I would like to improve for the summer. I was lucky to get a good run of first team games at Sussex last year, and I have learnt a lot from that experience. I now feel I have a good understanding of how I can improve this winter, so hopefully I can get positive results in the English summer. I also have my gym programme to complete before I go home alongside my cricket training. I was reading the next phase of it on New Years Day and I can assure you it made for intimidating reading, having had a couple of beers to celebrate the New Year!

I hope you all enjoyed your Christmas' and New Year. Here's hoping for a prosperous 2013 for everyone involved with Sussex Cricket.
