CT20: Reflection in defeat

13-Jan-2012

So, Sussex tasted defeat in their second match in the Caribbean T20 lastnight against Jamaica but Dave Brooks has been busy with his ear to the ground in Antigua.

13th January 2012

Yards summed it up brilliantly in his post match address to the players when he reminded them that we came here to learn, and we learn from that defeat, learn quickly, and move on to the next game. No cobwebs, now time to go full tilt and push through the next two games.

It was a disappointing defeat laced with some rather bizarre umpiring, including a wicket being over-turned when Amjad had Bonner caught by Kirk at third man. Apparently, everyone was ready other than the square leg Umpire who was signalling dead ball! The Jamaica innings - including a very short rain break - lasted a whopping 100 minutes due to all the delays and umpire reviews. Another world record for Sussex?

Our supporters ranks grew with Jon Filby's arrival. He bought two very important things - his wife, and the Sussex flag! No one asked us to bring one but now it flies proudly on match days on the flag poles in Antigua. He also bought Martin Denyer's "Good Old Sussex by the Sea" flag which is now a minor TV star locally and is seeking a suitable agent!

Jon also got interviewed by our radio partners supplying the live stream via the website during the interval about the Sussex Cricket World and all things cricket . . . I think we are making a few friends over here with our open friendly nature.

The day ended with a rather nice cake being presented at dinner to the birthday boy of the day, Mr Andrew Hodd. Happy Birthday Hoddy . . . & he celebrated at practise by taking a Lids quicker ball into the "lower abdominal area". I heard the hollow thud 100 yards away - OUCH!

Practise today is at the University Sports Ground, about 200 yards from the sea. Lovely pitches, rather bumpy outfield, jolly blowy!

Spirits remain high and the lads are keen to both bounce back quickly on Saturday against CCC (hopefully, you will pack The Long Room to watch us live on ESPN) and enjoy another meal!

P.S - another Sussex success with Dwayne's batting demolition of the Dutch last night . . . Go Smithy!
