CT20: Sussex triumph against Netherlands

11-Jan-2012

Sussex Sharks made a winning start to the Caribbean T20 lastnight as they saw off the Netherlands by 34 runs at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua.

11th January 2012

Having won the toss and elected to bat, the Sharks started slowly and the loss of opener Matt Machan in the second over, on his Twenty20 debut, was an early setback but Chris Nash and Joe Gatting set about repairing the damage.

When Gatting was bowled by Timm van der Gugten for 15, it sparked a mini collapse as skipper Yardy was poached first ball by the same bowler, caught behind. However, this brought Ben Brown to the crease who was determined to see Sussex through to a competitive total.

His 42 from the as many balls included only two fours and one six but was a vital cog for Sussex, whose mid to lower order was cleaned up by van der Gugten, who claimed impressive figures of 5 for 21 as the Sharks set the Netherlands 126 to win.

The associate nation never really got going in the run chase and lost wickets at regular intervals and at one stage the Dutch were reeling at 28 for 6 in the 7th over. Their captain Peter Borren played a lone hand in the Netherlands’ charge but his 45 from 40 balls was ultimately in vain as Sussex dismissed their opponents for only 91.

Naveed Arif Gondal, who has been in action in Pakistan’s domestic T20 tournament was the pick of the bowlers, claiming 3 for 12 from 3.3 overs, but it was an evening where each bowler truly got in on the act.  Yardy’s excellent figures of 2 for 14 from 4 overs appeased for his first ball duck, and there was also two wickets for Chris Liddle.

Amjad Khan, Will Beer and Nash all claimed one apiece on an excellent night for the Sharks in Antigua, who will now focus on a potentially tougher clash with Jamaica on Thursday evening (8pm GMT). You can of course listen to all the action via Sussex’s website.
