DISABILITY DAY: Annual event hailed another success at Sussex

18-May-2016

The 6th Annual Sussex Cricket Disability Day, supported by Ortus Business Finance, took place at a sunny 1st Central County Ground this week, with the inclement weather from last year’s event a distant memory.

Over 80 volunteers arrived early to assist the coaches with setting up coaching stations, multi skills zones, the Sussex Cricket Foundation inflatables, and many more activities ready for the 300 - 350 participants expected into the ground throughout the day.

Participants attended from schools, colleges, day centres and community organisations spread across the county. The 80-plus volunteers came from a variety of businesses including 1st CENTRAL, Metro Bank, Handelsbanken, Southern Water, Jointing Technologies, Yes Promo Products, Parkers, Chambers of Miss C Buchan, Oliver Graimes, Davenport Wealth and Spire HealthCare.

In addition, the event was supported by students trained as sports leaders from Worthing High School, sports students from Downlands School, and students from the University of Brighton.

It was a fantastic day with lots of activities for participants to get involved and have fun, with really positive feedback, including:

“A couple of our pupils participating commented on the way home that "It was the best trip ever!" Tom Brown, Woodlands Meed School

“The coaches and volunteers were so welcoming and friendly which helped my son join in - he is often shy about getting involved so it was lovely to see him taking part so happily” Ainslie Clarke

“I’ve attended a number of these annual events with my group and this was the best one ever” Nigel, Project Leader - Friary Gardeners.

Volunteers also had a great day and many commented that they would love to come back again next year. Comments included:

“There was a great positive spirit, and it was an opportunity to experience working with a group that I haven’t had much experience with previously, this has inspired me to work more in this area!” Sophie Loveday, University of Brighton.

“The best thing for me was seeing the look of sheer joy on the faces of participants!” Shirley Price, Yes Promo Products.

“Seeing the attendees having fun and laughing was the best thing about the day” Gemma Warrenne, Metro Bank.

Tim Shutt, Managing Director of the Sussex Cricket Foundation, said; “This event was a very strong example of how sport can be fully inclusive and accessible to everyone irrespective of ability.

“We are hugely indebted to the diverse range of volunteers who enabled fun and organised activity to be provided to just over 300 disabled participants.”
