DUBAI: Nash stars as Sharks open up with victory21-Mar-2013
Sussex Sharks made a winning start to their tour of Dubai this morning as they beat Lancashire Lightning in the opening game of the Emirates Airline Twenty20, at 7he Sevens Stadium in Dubai.
Lancashire won the toss and batted but Sussex drew first blood as early as the opening delivery, Lewis Hatchett yorking Stephen Moore.
Chris Jordan, opening the bowling with a brisk spell on debut for the Sharks, grabbed his first wicket of Steven Croft in only his second over, and returned figures of 3 for 14 in an impressive four over spell.
Lancashire’s opener Andrea Agathangelou held the top order together with 42 from 34 balls before Michael Rippon deceived him and Joe Gatting completed his first stumping as a Sussex wicketkeeper.
Regular wickets fell during the middle overs and Jimmy Anyon, making a rare t20 appearance for Sussex, bowled Wayne White for 29 and then had Oliver Newby caught by Chris Nash, with the final ball of his four overs.
Lancashire’s efforts to accelerate the run rate backfired as they lost their last four wickets for only eight runs, leaving them at 118 for 9 at the end of their innings.
In reply, it was Nash who batted majestically to lead the Sharks to victory. His partnership with Gatting, of 71 from 59 balls laid the foundations for the win with the latter scoring 20 from 24 balls.
Sussex managed to dash over the line with 16 balls to spare and Nash, who finished unbeaten on 76 from 59 balls, a knock which included ten fours, was named Man of the Match for his efforts.
The Sharks now take on the MCC side, which includes Rahul Dravid and Shaun Tait, at the same venue tomorrow as they aim to secure their place in the final later on that day. The match begins at 10.00am local time (6.00am GMT).
