DUBAI: Sussex retain Emirates T20 Trophy21-Mar-2014
Sussex won the Emirates Airline T20 Trophy today for the third year running as they beat the MCC by 12 runs at 7he Sevens Stadium in Dubai.
The Sharks had earlier disposed of Lancashire in the semi-final but made one change to the line-up for their showdown, as top-scorer and skipper Michael Yardy was replaced by Callum Jackson and Rory Hamilton-Brown took the captain’s armband.
After winning the toss and batting first, Sussex made 150 for 3 from their 20 overs as youngster Harry Finch top-scored with an impressive unbeaten 62. He was well supported by skipper Hamilton-Brown whilst Matt Prior’s 35 from 28 balls was the other major contribution.
The MCC looked to chase down the total but losing the key wickets of Sam Robson (19) and Samit Patel (26) cost them dear and despite an impressive unbeaten half-century from former Sussex man Ollie Rayner, the Sharks kept the MCC at arm’s length to win the match by 12 runs.
Hamilton-Brown in his skipper’s role also impressed with the ball taking two wickets (2 for 9), as did Steffan Piolet (2 for 24). The leg-spin of Will Beer, accounting for Robson, was the other scalp.
Sussex will now turn their attentions to 50-over preparation over the weekend as they take on the MCC Universities in Dubai on Saturday and the MCC Young Cricketers on Sunday in Abu Dhabi. Both games begin at 11.00am local time (7.00am GMT).
