DUBAI: Sussex victorious again in good pre-season form26-Mar-2012
Sussex were once again in good form today as they saw off Durham in a one-day 40 over pre-season match in Dubai earlier.
Fresh from victory in the Emirates Airline Twenty20 tournament on Friday, it was time for Sussex to turn their attentions to the longer format of the one-day game in order to offer the batsmen more time at the crease and the bowlers a longer spell with the ball.
The north-east side batted first and made 278 for 6, with three Sussex bowlers sharing two wickets apiece. The pace of Amjad Khan and Chris Liddle claimed two-wicket hauls whilst Chris Nash’s off-spin also picked up two. Naveed Arif Gondal bowled a tight four overs whilst left-arm seamer Lewis Hatchett, who spent a lot of last season on the sidelines, bowled his full eight overs.
Sussex were pegged back in reply as Nash fell early on but the rest of the top order fired to give a solid foundation. Luke Wells (25) and Ben Brown (47) both steadied the ship before Joe Gatting (64) top-scored.
Kirk Wernars (43), Andy Hodd (40) and Matt Machan (24) also made vital contributions to ensure Sussex made 282 for 7 to reach their target and secure victory in a tight run chase, with only one ball remaining.
Sussex will begin a two-day match against the same opponents tomorrow.
