DUBAI: Sussex win both their weekend 50-over matches24-Mar-2014
Sussex recorded back to back victories over the weekend during their pre-season tour of the UAE as they saw off both the MCC Universities and the MCC Young Cricketers in 50-over matches.
In the first encounter on Saturday at 7he Sevens Stadium in Dubai, Sussex won the toss and batted, making 299 for 6 from their 50 overs. Skipper Ben Brown top-scored with an unbeaten 72 whilst Matt Machan also scored 47 from 57 balls. Luke Wells and Michael Yardy both made 37 and there were contributions from Rory Hamilton-Brown (28) and Ashar Zaidi (26).
In reply, the Combined Universities side reached 278 for 9, falling 21 runs short of Sussex’s total. Will Beer was the pick of the bowlers for the Sharks, taking 5 for 55 whilst James Anyon (2 for 50), Lewis Hatchett (1 for 62) and Ashar Zaidi (1 for 49) were all amongst the wickets. Callum Jackson finished with three stumpings and two catches and for the students, Anish Patel top-scored with 95 and Loughborough’s Jack Sterland made 91.
On Sunday Sussex were back in action with a game against the MCC Young Cricketers, this time in Abu Dhabi. Again the Sharks won the toss and batted first making 218 for 9. Machan, who opened the batting, top-scored with 60 and Steffan Piolet made 58. In reply the youngsters were bowled out for 192 in the final over of the innings. Chris Liddle was the pick of the bowlers taking 3 for 19 whilst the left-arm seam of Lewis Hatchett claimed 3 for 34. Jon Lewis, Machan, Beer and Piolet all picked up one scalp each as Sussex claimed a 26 run win.Sussex are back in action tomorrow when they take on Lancashire in a two-day match.
