GILLIGAN: Sussex CCC commemorate Gilligan Brothers02-May-2012
Sussex County Cricket Club yesterday formally unveiled a plaque in memory of the Gilligan brothers on the South Stand at the Sea End of The PROBIZ County Ground.
The new South Stand, which incorporates the Club’s new media facilities, replaced the old Gilligan Stand.
Arthur Gilligan was one of the real stars of Sussex and England cricket in the 1920’s as a fast bowler and a hard-hitting lower order batsman. He played for Sussex from 1920 to 1932, was captain from 1922 to 1929 and also captained England. He also had a distinguished record in cricket administration, becoming President of both Sussex and the MCC.
Harold Gilligan was a batsman who played for Sussex between 1919 and 1931 and captained the County in 1930. He also captained England.
The two daughters of Harold Gilligan, Virginia May and Joanna Turner were present at the formal commemoration. They were then shown the Sussex Cricket World Museum, which displays a prominent portrait of Arthur Gilligan as well as photographs of both brothers. In addition the nieces of Arthur Gilligan allowed a silver platter which was presented to their uncle on being elected President of MCC in 1967 to remain in the possession of Sussex CCC.
Jim May, Sussex Chairman, said, “We were delighted to have Mrs May and Mrs Turner, the nieces of Arthur and daughters of Harold visiting us. We acknowledge the unique contribution that these two brothers made to Sussex Cricket. It seems highly unlikely that we will ever again witness brothers that captain both their County and Country."
“It is very pleasing that the Gilligan brothers are featured in the new Sussex Cricket World Museum where we can all celebrate the rich heritage of the first English County Club”.
