INTERNATIONALS: Machan top scores for Scotland04-Sep-2013
Sussex’s Matt Machan top-scored with 39 yesterday for Scotland but they were heavily beaten by Australia in their showpiece One-Day International against the tourists in Edinburgh.
Australia racked up a mammoth 362 for 5 from their 50 overs as both Aaron Finch and Shaun Marsh hit centuries. Machan’s knock (pictured) came from 59 balls and steadied the innings after the hosts had lost a wicket without scoring but they couldn’t make significant inroads into the Aussie total and were bowled out for 162.
In Malahide, Dublin, two of Sussex’s players went head to head as skipper Ed Joyce opened the batting for his native Ireland against an England side containing Luke Wright. But Joyce could only manage a single until he trod on his stumps to a Boyd Rankin delivery, however a century from William Porterfield gave the Irish a competitive 269 for 7.
Wright made 5 until he chopped onto his stumps from Tim Murtagh but a record fifth-wicket stand from Ravi Bopara and Eoin Morgan, who both made hundreds, ensured England were winners by six wickets.
Both Wright and Chris Jordan remain in the England squad for the ODI series against Australia which begins on Friday. Joyce and Machan will go head-to-head also at the end of the week as Ireland face Scotland in Belfast.
