JUNIORS: Treble success against Surrey

Sussex Boys Under 13s (Friendly) and Under 15s (ECB Cup) both triumphed against Surrey at the weekend, as did the Girls Under 17s (ECB Cup).

The Under-13 Boys travelled to Dorking on Sunday and batting first made 155 for 8. Danial Ibrahim scored 46 and was well supported by James Barker (31)

In reply, Surrey could only manage 124 with Barker and Archie Lenham taking three wickets apiece. Hashim Riaz took two and Patrick Norton-Smith and Phoenix Ashworth one each as Sussex won by 31 runs with a great team performance.

The Under 15 Boys faced Surrey at the Blackstone Academy Ground sponsored by Hurstpierpoint College on Sunday on a sweltering hot day.

Surrey batted first and with some disciplined bowling from the hosts they could only manage 173 and were bowled out in 48.4 overs. Henry Crocombe (3 for 28), Tom Hinley (2 for 20), Hugo Gillespie (2 for 13) and Scott Lenham (1 for 19) were the wicket takers in an innings that included two run outs.

Sussex made 175 for 4 in 42.5 overs in reply with Lenham (35), Hugo Gillespie (57) and Ollie Carter 41*) all making useful contributions.

Manager Phil Hudson said: “The boys should be very proud of their performance.
“We bounced back well from a slow start and our spinners stood out. We have ticked a lot of boxes and I was pleased that we put pressure on the Surrey batsman. That's two big steps made on the way to ECB Cup qualification.”

Sussex’s next game in the competition is on July 2 away to Essex.

The Under-17 Girls played their match at Blackstone on Saturday, and after winning the toss Surrey made a decent 203 all out in 43 overs.

Pick of the bowlers were Charlotte Hepburn, who took 4 for 32, and Ellie Robinson, who took 2 for 31, and they were backed up by a disciplined performance in the field. After a promising start Sussex were in a good position until we a mid-innings mini collapse saw four quick wickets go down.

However, a brilliant partnership between Robinson and Becky Landy saw Sussex home in the final over by four wickets.
