MAGOFFIN: Aussie posts highest FTI MVP bowling score of season

28-May-2013

Steve Magoffin’s magnificent 12 for 31 against Somerset has earned him the highest points total by any bowler in the FTI Most Valuable Player rankings this season.

The Australian helped bundle the West Country side out for just 76 in the first innings at Horsham, bowling 11 of the 22.4 overs required unchanged and taking 8 for 20 at an economy rate of just 1.82 runs per over.

He then followed that up with 4 for 11 in the second innings, helping Sussex win by an innings and 116 runs in a day and a half - taking them top of the LV= County Championship Division One.

His performance earned him 58.7 MVP points in total and propelled him to second in the FTI MVP rankings in the longer form of the game and seventh overall when YB40 cricket is included.

The first innings points return of 44.29 is the highest by any bowler so far this season and tenth in the all-time charts for the LV=CC since the Professional Cricketers’ began taking records in 2007.

The competition, which feature a £10,000 purse for the cricketer who scoops the top prize at the end of the season, award points for every run scored, wicket taken and catch held.

Bowlers receive higher marks for good economy rates, bowling maidens and for dismissing the top order, whilst batsmen are rewarded for high run rates and the percentage of the team’s runs they hit.

There are now more points across all formats for those notching 40 and 50 per cent of a team’s total, for top order batsmen, in recognition of their greater challenge against the new ball, and for those who hit big hundreds.

It is also harder to receive a strike rate bonus in YB40 cricket, reflecting an overall increase in scoring rates for this format, and dot balls in Friends Life t20 cricket will also become more valuable.
