MARATHON: Sussex Staff to run the Brighton Marathon on Sunday for Multiple Sclerosis Centre

11-Apr-2013

Several members of Sussex County Cricket Club’s Office Staff will be undertaking the ultimate challenge in Brighton and Hove on Sunday, as they will be running the Brighton Marathon in aid of the Sussex Multiple Sclerosis Treatment Centre.

The MS Treatment Centre is very honoured to be a Local Charity Partner for the Brighton Marathon 2013 and delighted that they will be helped along the way by members of Sussex’s staff.

The link between the Club and the MS Centre came from patron Alistair Hignell, a former Gloucestershire cricketer and England Rugby Union International. He was diagnosed with MS in 1999 and after speaking to former Sussex batsman and current Business Relationship Manager Tony Cottey at a recent BrightonandHoveJobs.com County Ground event, some members of staff decided that they would take on the challenge.

The MS Centre is a small independent charity that helps hundreds of people from East and West Sussex. The charity gets no funding from the NHS or the local council, so fundraising events like the Brighton Marathon are key opportunities for them to raise the core running costs of £120,000 per year and help them to provide vital services to people with neurological conditions.

Tony Cottey said of the Marathon run, “We are delighted to be able to help raise vital funds for the MS Centre and it will be a real challenge before the staff embark on a busy cricket season here at Hove.

“Hopefully there won’t be too many lasting effects on the muscles as they will need to get used to walking round the ground again so many times on a match day!”

Joanna Hedges, Fundraising Coordinator and Deputy Charity Manager of the MS Centre said, “We have been overwhelmed by the amazing support from Sussex County Cricket Club’s Brighton Marathon Runners who have already raised thousands for the charity."
