MATCH DRAWN: Rain prevents any play after lunch on Day Three

A soggy scene at Hove this afternoon

Sussex’s first-class University Match with Leeds/Bradford MCCU was abandoned as a draw today, as they was no further play after lunch due to rain at Hove.

The visitors resumed their innings this morning 192 for 2 and progressed to 290 for 4 before the rain came shortly before lunchtime.

Billy Root, brother of England star Joe, made his first century in first-class cricket and was eventually snared for 133 as Harry Finch, who made a ton earlier in the match, picked up first wicket in first-class cricket, with Ed Joyce taking the catch.

Christian Davis had shortly beforehand become Danny Briggs’ second wicket for Sussex as he took a return catch to dismiss the former Northamptonshire man for 65.

But only 29 overs were possible on the third and final day as the rain set in at The 1st Central County Ground, and the match was abandoned as a draw.

Attentions now turn to Sussex’s first Specsavers County Championship match of the season against Northamptonshire on Sunday at Wantage Road.
