MCC: Mike Griffith elected MCC President

Former Sussex captain Mike Griffith will serve as the next President of the Marylebone Cricket Club after he was chosen by the current President Phillip Hodson this week.

He will take up office on 1st October 2012 and will become the third MCC President from Sussex in four years, following in the path of John Barclay and Christopher Martin-Jenkins.

Griffith made his debut for Sussex in 1962, a year before he became an MCC member and went to Cambridge University, where he won Blues for cricket, rackets and hockey.

He played for Sussex for twelve years, playing 276 first-class matches in the process and captaining Sussex for five years.

He represented both England and Great Britain at hockey and is the only person to have played both First-Class cricket and international hockey at Lord’s.

Griffith followed in his father Billy’s footsteps by playing and keeping wicket for Sussex, and does so again by becoming President of MCC. Billy Griffith served as an Assistant Secretary from 1952 – 1962, as Secretary in 1962 – 1974 and as President in 1979 – 1980.

Jim May, Chairman of Sussex County Cricket Club said, “Everyone involved with Sussex Cricket are delighted at Mike’s election to the post of President of the MCC, and offer their best wishes to him for his year in office.”
