NEWS: Charles Henry Gordon-Lennox, 10th Duke of Richmond and 5th Duke of Gordon

Sussex Cricket is saddened to learn of the death of its former President and Patron, Charles Henry Gordon-Lennox, the10th Duke of Richmond and 5th Duke of Gordon.

The Duke, who died peacefully at the Goodwood Estate on Friday (1st September) at the age of 87, was the President of Sussex County Cricket Club from 1991 until 2001 and then its Patron until 2015.

Aware of his ancestors’ prominent roles in the development of cricket, the Duke was keen to promote the history of the sport in the county where his family home was situated.  This included hosting a dinner at Goodwood to launch the initial fundraising for the Sussex Cricket Museum Trust.  The Duke’s patronage for the game in Sussex also included his generous support of Goodwood CC via his longstanding role as President of the club.

The current President of Sussex Cricket, John Abbott said ‘The Duke of Richmond made an extremely valuable contribution to the development of cricket throughout Sussex for which we are all grateful.  I know that Sussex Cricket Directors, Members, Staff and all those connected with cricket in Sussex will wish to offer our sincere condolences to the family.’

A private funeral will be held at the family church, Boxgrove Priory. A memorial service is planned at Chichester Cathedral at a later date.
