OPEN LETTER FROM JIM MAY27-May-2014
I am writing this note on behalf of the Board, the management and the playing staff of Sussex County Cricket Club. This comes with the support of Zac Toumazi, Chief Executive Sussex Cricket, Mark Robinson, Professional Cricket Manager, and Ed Joyce, Captain. Sussex County Cricket Club has a proud sporting heritage. Our Club is founded on strong values and our playing success since first winning the County Championship in 2003 reflects our special ethos.
We were therefore shocked to learn of allegations of match fixing in 2011 and in view of the sensitivity and the complexity of the situation we have been unable to make public comment until now. I can confirm that Sussex has worked very closely and co-operated with both the ICC and ECB Anti-Corruption units to help establish the facts of what occurred in the two limited overs matches during 2011. We are totally supportive of any action taken by the ECB and other authorities to tackle corruption. The question of corruption in cricket has received a higher profile in recent years and I believe that there is now a far greater awareness of this issue. We believe that the education available to players and staff and the controls that have been put in place by the ECB and the Professional Cricketers’ Association puts our game in a good position as we move forward. We are all conscious of the constant need to be vigilant and of the processes in place to report any suspicions.
I want our supporters to know that our playing and coaching staff are extremely shocked and angry about the allegations that any former colleagues may have acted in a corrupt way while wearing the Sussex shirt. They see it as an insult to them and the game. Our players take a great personal pride in performing to the highest level when they play for Sussex. Indeed our unprecedented success in the last decade, despite having a mid table playing budget, is testimony to the way the Sussex team continues to punch above its weight. We are planning a Members Forum on Monday 2 June at Hove at 10am before Day 2 of our match against Nottinghamshire when Zac Toumazi, Mark Robinson and I will be present. We are all very conscious of the great support we enjoy from our members, sponsors, partners, supporters and all our other stakeholders.
Thank you for this support as we look forward to a great summer of cricket
Chairman, Sussex County Cricket Club
