PETER WATSON

18-Jan-2016

Sussex Cricket Limited is deeply saddened by the recent death of Peter Watson, one of its longest serving and most popular Vice Presidents.

Peter who was in practice as a solicitor in London, served the Sussex County Cricket Club Supporters Club as its Chairman for approximately 10 years, until some 10 years ago. During that period he and his committee raised many thousands of pounds, which was donated for new ground equipment and the improvement of the facilities at the County Ground.

Peter and his ever-supportive wife, Myrtle, were often to be seen in the Board Room at SCCC matches and was always great company. He enjoyed his cricket enormously and liked nothing better than to see SCCC being successful. Indeed, he was a genuine and committed supporter and therefore suited well for the post he held.

Richard Barrow recalls a conversation one day between Peter and John Barclay during which it was discovered that John as a boy had lived in the same house in Crowborough that Peter was residing in at the time of the chat; an incredible coincidence!

Unfortunately, some six years ago, Peter was diagnosed with dementia and after suffering at home under the devoted care of Myrtle, died recently, after spending the last 13 weeks of his life in a local nursing home.

Peter’s funeral service will be held on Wednesday, 20th January 2016 at 10.45am, at the Tunbridge Wells Crematorium. This will be followed by a thanksgiving service in the St. Michael and All Angels Church, Crowborough, starting at 11.30am. The church can be found in Rotherfield Road, Jarvis Brook, Crowborough, East Sussex, TN6 2DY - this is just under the railway bridge at the bottom of Crowborough Hill.

Myrtle is keen to visit the County Ground in due course, with her son and daughter, not only to donate a good number of cricketing books and memorabilia to the Museum, but also to sprinkle Peter’s ashes on the outfield, something he had agreed with the late Peter Eaton many years ago!
