PREVIEW: Championship run-in starts with trip to Colwyn Bay

27-Aug-2017

After the conclusion of their NatWest T20 Blast campaign for another year, Sussex turn their full attention to the Specsavers County Championship Division Two run-in.

Five games remain for Sussex in the competition between now and the end of September, beginning with their match against Glamorgan at Colwyn Bay starting on Monday (28th August, 11.00am start).

Much like the South Group of the Blast, Division Two  of the Championship - or the battle for the second promotion place, at least - is looking exceedingly tight.

With Nottinghamshire unbeaten at the top of the table and looking like they might run away with the divisional title, the four sides beneath them - Worcestershire, Northamptonshire, Sussex and Kent - are engaged in an intense scrap for elevation to the top flight.

Sussex lie in fourth, 17 points in arrears to second-placed Worcestershire but with a game in hand, two points behind Northants in third and level on 132 points with fifth-placed Kent.

Their final matches are away at Glamorgan and Northamptonshire, home against Derbyshire, away at Durham, before the season concludes with the visit of Nottinghamshire to The 1st Central County Ground, Hove.

Sussex enter tomorrow’s fixture against Glamorgan in tremendous red ball form, having won five of their last seven matches.

Their opponents, Glamorgan, come into the game having lost their past three encounters.

As a result of the competition’s new structure, whereby some Division Two sides play each other just once, this will be the first and only meeting between Sussex and Glamorgan in the Championship this season.

Sussex travel to Colwyn Bay with a 14-man squad. Luke Wright returns after recovering from the injury that prevented him from featuring in Sussex’s last four-day match: the nine wicket victory over Worcestershire earlier this month.

Ben Brown (captain)
Jofra Archer

Ahead of the trip to North Wales, Sussex Head Coach, Mark Davis said: “With five games to go in the Championship, the team is excited and motivated to end the 2017 season positively.

“We have played outstanding red ball cricket for the last two months and will be looking to win at Colwyn Bay next week.

“We have players in good form and an extremely motivated squad to end the season strongly.”
