PREVIEW: Sussex head to Northants to begin Specsavers County Championship campaign

Sussex begin their Specsavers County Championship campaign on Sunday as they head to Wantage Road to face Northamptonshire (11.00am start).

Following friendlies with both Surrey and Hampshire, and a first-class University Match with Leeds/Bradford MCCU which finished as a draw, it’s now time for the Championship action to get underway and for Sussex to begin their assault on the Division Two title, as they aim to gain promotion back to the top-flight at the first attempt.

Luke Wright (1,210) and Ben Brown (1,031) were Sussex’s leading run-scorers last season in the Championship, whilst Steve Magoffin was the second leading wicket-taker in Division One, as the tall seamer took 69 wickets. Brown also made an unbeaten century in midweek University Match, along with Harry Finch.

New Zealand star Ross Taylor is set to make his debut but Sussex will be without Chris Jordan as he has treatment on his right elbow, and he is set to be sidelined for the first two Championship matches. Danny Briggs and George Garton would both feature in the Championship for the first time for Sussex, if selected.

The Sussex squad is as follows:

Danny Briggs
Ben Brown (wkt)
Harry Finch
George Garton
Lewis Hatchett
Ed Joyce
Matt Machan
Steve Magoffin
Chris Nash
Ollie Robinson
Ajmal Shahzad
Ross Taylor
