PREVIEW: Sussex Sharks head to Taunton

After another rain affected match which saw Sussex and Middlesex share the spoils on Friday night at The 1st Central County Ground, Hove, the Sharks head to the Cooper Associates County Ground, Taunton on Sunday (30th July) to take on Somerset in their next NatWest T20 Blast fixture (2.30pm start).

Sussex will enter the game in confident mood after a fine bowling and fielding display on Friday. Danny Briggs and Jofra Archer were particularly impressive, bowling with excellent control in challenging conditions, taking three wickets and conceding less than a run-a-ball during their combined seven overs.

The rain denied the Sharks’ batsmen the chance to finish the job, and they will be hoping for better weather on Sunday to show what they can do.

Sussex have a fine record in T20 cricket against Somerset, having won five of their seven completed matches against the county, including their past two encounters.

The first time the counties met in this format was the final of the 2009 Twenty20 Cup at Edgbaston, when the Sharks won by 63 runs and were crowned champions.

Chris Nash – the only player from the current squad to have featured in all of Sussex’s T20 matches against Somerset – will have fond memories of last season’s clash between the two sides after scoring a career best 112 not out at Hove.

All-rounder, David Wiese, made his Sussex debut in the same fixture, impressing with figures of 4-38.

Head coach, Mark Davis, has announced a couple of changes to the squad for the journey west. Luke Wright and Tymal Mills miss out as they stay back at Hove in a bid to shake off their respective niggles, ahead of our next home match against Surrey on Thursday 3rd August.

Speaking ahead of Sunday’s match, Davis said: “We’re looking forward to the trip to Taunton. The lads have shown good signs in our last four games and we go to Somerset in a confident mood.

“The South Group is still very congested and a few wins can get us moving up the table quickly.”
