PREVIEW: Sussex welcome Kent for penultimate home Championship clash

30-Aug-2016

Chris Nash is now the leading run-scorer in Division Two of the Specsavers County Championship, with 1,058

The penultimate home Specsavers County Championship match of the season comes to The 1st Central County Ground tomorrow, when Kent are the visitors to Hove (11.00am start).

This clash between the two neighbouring counties now has huge significance at the top of the Division Two table after Sussex sealed their third victory of the season in dramatic fashion at Glamorgan last week.

Chris Nash hit a fine century in the first innings before a partnership of 55 in nine overs for the eighth wicket from Ben Brown and Danny Briggs in a dramatic second innings run-chase saw Sussex get over the line on the final afternoon’s play at Cardiff.

Sussex are 43 points adrift of leaders Essex but crucially, have a game in hand on the top three teams in the table, and a third straight Championship victory would see them in the mix for the one automatic promotion place.

There have been some forced changes to the squad for this match, with the news that skipper Luke Wright has been ruled out with an arm injury, so Brown will captain the side.

Ed Joyce is on international duty with Ireland, Jofra Archer has returned to the West Indies for a family funeral and George Garton is missing with a knee injury, so several players have been called up the squad; Craig Cachopa, Fynn Hudson-Prentice, Ollie Robinson and Ajmal Shahzad are all added, along with 17 year-old Academy batsman Tom Haines who would be making his first-class debut if selected.

Chris Jordan is on England duty for the ODI series with Pakistan, and Harry Finch, Matt Machan and Stu Whittingham are all still sidelined with injury.

The Sussex squad is as follows:

Danny Briggs
Ben Brown (c/wkt)
Craig Cachopa
Tom Haines
Fynn Hudson-Prentice
Steve Magoffin
Chris Nash
Ollie Robinson
Phil Salt
Ajmal Shahzad
Luke Wells
David Wiese
