PREVIEW: Wells to captain at Durham

18-Sep-2017

Luke Wells will captain Sussex for the first time during this week’s Specsavers County Championship Division Two fixture against Durham at Emirates Riverside.

Regular skipper, Ben Brown is recovering from a sore back after last week’s defeat to Derbyshire at The 1st Central County Ground and therefore misses the trip north.

Michael Burgess will take over wicketkeeping duties in Brown’s absence.

Burgess is one of a number of younger players added to the Sussex squad, with Phil Salt and Harry Finch also included ahead of the meeting with Durham, which gets underway tomorrow (Tuesday 19th September, 10.30am start).

Chris Jordan returns to the squad after featuring in England’s T20 International against West Indies, also at Emirates Riverside, on Saturday evening.

Having played against Derbyshire, Chris Nash, Angus Robson and David Wiese are rested.

Squad:
Luke Wells (captain)
Jofra Archer
Danny Briggs
Michael Burgess
Laurie Evans
Harry Finch
George Garton
Chris Jordan
Ollie Robinson
Phil Salt
Stiaan van Zyl
Stuart Whittingham
Luke Wright

Speaking ahead of the match, Head Coach Mark Davis said: “The last two weeks have been disappointing and we want to make sure we end the season with two solid performances.

“A number of players are going to get an opportunity and it’s the right time to get games into a few of our younger players, to continue their development.
“Luke Wells will captain the team and is looking forward to the challenge.”

This week’s match will be the 30th time Sussex have met Durham in the County Championship. The sides’ previous meeting came at The 1st Central County Ground earlier this season; a game Sussex won by an innings and 177 runs.

Luke Wells made a career-best 258 in his first appearance of 2017 in that fixture back in May. There was also a century for Stiaan van Zyl and half-centuries for Michael Burgess and Jofra Archer, who also took eight wickets in the match.

Ball-by-ball commentary of the match will be available from BBC Sussex HERE. Updates will be provided on the @SussexCCC Twitter, Facebook & Instagram channels.
