REPORT: Amjad just Khan get enough as Sussex take control at Hove

10-Aug-2012

Sussex moved into another good LV=County Championship Division One position at the close of play today as they ended Day One of their match with Middlesex only 64 runs behind the visitors with seven wickets remaining, after Amjad Khan had earlier caused devastation with the ball.

The hosts opted to stay with the same side that saw off Worcestershire inside three days at The PROBIZ County Ground, Hove seven days ago against a Middlesex side lying two places below them in the table, and included two former Sussex players in their starting XI; spinner Ollie Rayner and West Indian seamer Corey Collymore.

And Sussex once again attacked from the off as Ed Joyce won the toss and inserted his former County into bat. And what a decision it was as the Lord’s outfit were reduced to 65 for 6 inside 24 overs. Both Khan (pictured) and Steve Magoffin did the damage, ripping through the top-order and it was only when Rayner and Gareth Berg dug in did the total begin to take some more respectability, putting on 54 before the former Sussex man was caught behind by Ben Brown off a rampant Amjad.

Middlesex never really recovered bar a late flurry from Tim Murtagh, who top-scored with 34, and managed 170 before Monty Panesar claimed the final wicket. But it was Khan who really impressed with superb figures of 5 for 25, eclipsing the also excellent work of Magoffin (3 for 45) infront of an impressive crowd who enjoyed the gorgeous weather at The PROBIZ today.

Chris Nash and Joyce put on 37 in the opening partnership for Sussex before Nash was snared by Berg, Josh Simpson taking the catch behind, whilst Luke Wells became his second victim as he nicked to Neil Dexter at slip with the score on 63. Murray Goodwin appeared to be deceived by a Toby Roland-Jones delivery which accounted for him leg-before but Joyce (49 not out) and Michael Yardy (24 not out) looked in good form before the close as they put on 42 in the late evening sunshine.

Play continues at 11.00am tomorrow morning at The PROBIZ.
