REPORT & REACTION: Archer on target as debutant makes Pakistan quiver

Jofra Archer celebrates the wicket of Mohammad Hafeez at Hove today

Debutant Jofra Archer starred for Sussex on the opening day of their three-day tourist match with Pakistan at The 1st Central County Ground, Hove today.

Archer, a former West Indian Under-19’s bowler, took 4 for 49 from his 22 overs, including the wickets of centurion Azhar Ali and Pakistan skipper Misbah-ul-Haq on his first-class debut.

Sussex selected both Archer and Abidine Sakande, another 21 year-old bowler to make their first-team debuts against Pakistan, who rested both Mohammad Amir and Yasir Shah after they played in their opening tour game with Somerset earlier this week.

Archer made an early breakthrough claiming the wicket of opener Shan Masood for four as got one to lift slightly and find the edge to Ben Brown behind the stumps.

He had accounted for both openers with 49 on the board trapping Mohammad Hafeez leg-before for 17 but a partnership of 125 between Ali and Younis Khan (59) steadied the Pakistan ship, before the latter found Ajmal Shahzad at mid-off as he used his feet to Danny Briggs.

The serene progress that Ali made was complimented by the Pakistan’s captain Misbah and the pair put on 146 for the fourth-wicket before Archer again did the damage, this time with the new ball.

Ali, who hit 20 fours and a six in a super knock of 145, to go with the unbeaten century he made in the opening tour match at Somerset, attempted to hook a bouncer but edged behind to Brown before the captain Misbah (68) fell in the closing stages of the day, as Archer picked up his fourth wicket to cap a fine debut in Sussex colours.
