REPORT: Briggs hits century as Sussex draw with Cardiff MCCU

Danny Briggs hit a century for Sussex as the final day of the three-day University match with Cardiff MCCU finished in a draw today, at The 1st Central County Ground, Hove.

Briggs, batting at number 9, eventually retired out on 103 as Sussex reached 414 all out to lead the students by 590 runs.

Cardiff then reached 86 for 3 from 30 overs as the match ended in a draw.

Sussex resumed on 207 for 6 overnight with Briggs (pictured) and Michael Burgess at the wicket, and the pair put on 135 for the seventh wicket before the latter departed for 61.

That didn’t deter Briggs though, who shared a stand of 69 with Ajmal Shahzad (30) to go through to his first three-figure score for Sussex, which included 11 fours.

Shortly after, Cardiff took to the crease again and faced 30 overs from Sussex before the close of play. Jofra Archer was the pick of the bowlers, taking 2 for 25 from his ten overs whilst Steve Magoffin claimed the other wicket in Cardiff’s total.

Sussex have now completed pre-season matches against Surrey, Somerset, Hampshire and Cardiff MCCU, and now face Kent on Friday for the first day of their opening Specsavers County Championship match. Play is due to begin at The 1st Central County Ground on Friday at 11.00am.
