REPORT: Curtailed day in MCCU match at Weetwood02-May-2012
Only 40.4 overs were possible at Weetwood yesterday on Day One of Sussex’s three-day MCC University Match against Leeds/Bradford MCCU.
Skipper Kirk Wernars won the toss and elected to field with a young side that included two players making their first team debuts for the County in the shape of Academy youngsters Harry Finch and Callum Jackson.
And Sussex didn’t have to wait long at all until they were amongst the wickets, with Naveed Arif Gondal, an experienced head in the youthful line-up, trapping Ben Slater lbw with the first ball of the day.
Will Adkin, Lewis Hatchett and Wernars were all amongst the wickets but it was a stop-start day with the inclement weather surrounding Leeds. The MCCU were reduced to 62 for 5 but rallied round to reach 111 for 5 before play was eventually abandoned for the day.The image above shows Callum Jackson (left) and Harry Finch at Weetwood yesterday as they made their first-team debuts for Sussex
