REPORT: Full Monty in Hove victory to keep treble dream alive for Sussex03-Aug-2012
Sussex wrapped up a ruthless victory over Worcestershire inside three days this evening as they saw off their struggling visitors by an innings and 117 runs at The PROBIZ County Ground, Hove, with Monty Panesar claiming four wickets.
Play didn’t begin until 1.10pm on Day Three and it took until 7.00pm to finish the Midlanders off during the extra half hour’s play which was possible with the victory already in sight for Sussex.
When play finally got underway at Hove today, Sussex, who resumed on 325 for 7, added 95 before declaring, losing only one wicket, that of Steve Magoffin who was comprehensively bowled by Alan Richardson. James Anyon was in impressive form with the bat though and passed his half-century, aided by Amjad Khan’s 27, to set up a declaration at 420 for 7, leaving Worcestershire needing 258 simply to make Sussex bat again. Richardson was the only man to get his teeth into the Sussex order, taking 5 for 90.
Worcestershire’s innings was generally a tale of woe with only three batsmen managing to make double figures. It was the bowling of Panesar (pictured) though in the late evening sunshine which really accelerated the victory for Sussex and his figures of 23-13-23-4 epitomised the hosts’ ruthlessness with the ball.
The visitors didn’t actually lose their full quota of wickets as James Cameron, hit on the head from a Steve Magoffin bouncer, was unable to continue and retired hurt three balls later. Only skipper Daryl Mitchell’s 142-ball vigil for 48 delayed the inevitable for Worcestershire as Magoffin, Khan and Anyon all picked up wickets in their superb displays of fast bowling.
A winning start for Ed Joyce as Sussex captain as they kept alive their hopes of what could still be an incredible treble of trophies at The PROBIZ this season, moving into third in the Division One table this evening.
