REPORT: Honours even at New Road19-May-2012
Sussex drew their LV=County Championship match with Worcestershire at New Road today after rain played it’s part in the final outcome.
Losing 44 overs yesterday and not playing until 1.10pm today meant that Sussex’s time to dangle Worcestershire a carrot and bowl for victory had significantly decreased.
Resuming on 143 for no wicket overnight, Ed Joyce reached his second century in a week to follow on from his ton against the Unicorns in the Clydesdale Bank 40 on Sunday as he made an unbeaten 108 but Chris Nash, on his birthday and also his 100th first-class appearance, missed out as he was trapped lbw by Moeen Ali for 98.
An incredibly swift 36 from only 11 balls from Joe Gatting, which included four sixes, propelled Sussex to 258 for 4 when they declared, setting Worcestershire a target of 315 in the 60 overs remaining in the day.
Sussex were made to wait nearly ten overs for their first wicket as Daryl Mitchell was lbw to Naveed Arif Gondal whilst defiance from Michael Klinger (67) and Vikram Solanki (44) were to ensure that Sussex had to settle for a draw, as Worcestershire reached 174 for 4 from 47.2 overs when play was called for the day.
Another 9 points for Sussex and they’re back in action tomorrow in the CB40 once again, this time away to Northamptonshire at Wantage Road (1.45pm start).
