REPORT: Joyce and Machan make early season centuries at Hove01-Apr-2014
Sussex passed 400 on Day One of the first-class University Match at The BrightonandHoveJobs.com County Ground today as they faced Loughborough MCCU.
After winning the toss and electing to bat against the students, Sussex piled up 421 for 9 in the 99 overs bowled in the day as Matt Machan (119) and Ed Joyce (103) both scored centuries.
The latter has the privilege of being the first batsman to score a first-class century in England during the 2014 season, and Machan surpassed his high score of 103 in first-class matches which he made against Somerset at Taunton last season.
Matt Prior had earlier made a breezy 43 from 44 deliveries whilst Ben Brown also looked set to join the hundred club however he pulled Adam Riley to the square leg boundary having reached 85. He was one of five victims for Riley, whose offbreaks were by far the pick of the Loughborough bowling.
Play resumes at 11.00am tomorrow morning at Hove and entrance is FREE.
