REPORT: Nash and Joyce settle in on rain-affected day at Worcester

18-May-2012

Sussex will take a lead of 199 runs into Day Four of their LV=CC clash with Worcestershire at New Road.

Worcestershire could only add ten more runs this morning before James Anyon got the first wicket of the day. Wicketkeeper Ben Scott was caught on the crease and adjudged lbw. The hosts managed to creep over the 250 when David Lucas edged too far out of his ground when fending off Monty Panesar, as sharp work by Chris Nash at short leg saw him throw down the stumps and Lucas was easily out of his ground.

And it was Monty who had the final say with Richard Jones the last man to go, going for a big shot but only managing to scoop the ball to Naveed Arif Gondal at mid-on. Worcestershire were dismissed for 259, 56 behind Sussex’s first innings total.

Nash and Ed Joyce set about their task in style and raced towards a century stand. It was the first time that the pairing had reached a hundred stand since almost a year to the day when they put on 201 against Somerset. The two successive balls after the century came up saw Joyce and Nash reach their half-centuries respectively.

Sussex reached 143 without loss when the inevitable gloom descended on New Road and play was called to a halt for bad light. Rain later on in the day ensured that there was no play after 3pm and the visitors will resume 199 runs ahead in the morning on the fourth and final day.
