REPORT: Nash and Wright make hay on scorching day at Hove25-May-2012
Chris Nash hit his first century of the season as Sussex went past 300 on Day One of their LV=County Championship clash with Nottinghamshire at The PROBIZ County Ground, Hove.
Nash, who had fallen two short of a century a week ago at Worcester on his 29th birthday, looked in excellent touch as he and returning star Luke Wright put on 145 for the fifth wicket on another stunning day in Hove.
Michael Yardy, who missed lastnight’s Clydesdale Bank 40 victory over Yorkshire, won the toss and batted first and it was the wicket of the skipper himself that saw Sussex slip to 97 for 4 shortly after lunch as Riki Wessels threw down the stumps to run Yardy out.
But the partnership between Nash and Wright, after the latter smashed a century in lastnight’s comfortable win, swung the pendulum in Sussex’s favour despite some fairly disciplined bowling from the Nottinghamshire attack.
With both players departing within three overs of each other after tea it was left to the lower order to grind out the runs and despite a 28 run partnership between Naveed Arif Gondal and Steve Magoffin being broken when the Australian cut Harry Gurney to Patel at backward point, the hosts edged past 300 to earn a third batting point.
The hosts will resume tomorrow morning on 305/9 with Gondal and Monty Panesar at the wicket as James Anyon perished on what turned out to be the final ball of the day. Play returns to its normal start time of 11.00am.
