REPORT: Nash, bang, wallop as Sussex on top at Hove

Sussex moved into an incredibly strong position on Day Two of their penultimate LV=County Championship Division One clash with Somerset as Chris Nash’s century saw them finish the day 186 for 2, a lead of 273 runs ahead of their visitors.

Resuming on 30 for 1 overnight, Sussex’s bowlers were on top of their game with seamers Steve Magoffin and Lewis Hatchett, making his first Championship appearance of the season, took three wickets apiece whilst Monty Panesar also got in on the act, claiming figures of 3 for 15 from 13 overs in an economic spell. Somerset were bowled out for only 134 trailing their hosts by 87 runs.

With Sussex taking to the crease for the second time, after their 59 remaining overs in the day they finished well on top in this match, 273 runs ahead thanks to the endeavours of Nash and Murray Goodwin, playing his final innings at Hove.

Nash played beautifully for his century as the sun shone down on The PROBIZ but it was Goodwin’s knock that may be remembered more. He’ll resume unbeaten on 51 tomorrow, as will Nash on 106, hoping for a fairytale ending to his Sussex career as well as another victory as the season draws to a close.

With Warwickshire well on top against Worcestershire at New Road it looks to be academic what Sussex do in this match in terms of winning the title but a second placed finish is still achievable and victory here would go a long way towards that.

Sussex 221 & 186/2, Somerset 134
