REPORT: Nash makes half-century in red-ball warm-up with Hampshire

Chris Nash on his way to a half-century against Hampshire today

Sussex completed a busy week of pre-season preparations with a day of red-ball practice against Hampshire at The 1st Central County Ground, Hove today.

With the March weather having been kind to Sussex, there has been four full days’ play at Hove this week, coupled with the three-day match against Surrey last week.

Sussex were defeated by Hampshire yesterday in a 50-over white ball match but today was all about preparing for the Specsavers County Championship, which Sussex begin with a clash with neighbours Kent at fortnight today at Hove.

It was decided that both sides would bat for 45 overs each and after Sussex took to the crease first, they made 139 for 4 from their allotted overs. Chris Nash top-scored with 60 whilst Harry Finch, who has been amongst the runs throughout this run of pre-season matches, made 38. Liam Dawson was the pick of the bowlers for Hampshire, the spinner taking 2 for 22 from nine overs.

It was then Hampshire’s turn to bat and from 45 overs, they amassed 165 for 7. Stuart Whittingham claimed figures of 2 for 43 from nine overs whilst Danny Briggs picked up 2 for 25 from 11 overs.

Dawson showed his mettle with both bat and ball, making 63 whilst Sean Ervine scored 29 until he was run out by Jofra Archer.

Sussex have one more pre-season match before the main campaign, when they welcome Cardiff MCCU to Hove next Friday 7th April for a three-day game. This is a first-class match and entrance is FREE. Play is due to begin at 11.00am each day.
