REPORT: Rain a pain for Sussex as Surrey claim victory08-Jul-2012
Sussex Sharks were defeated for the first time in this season's Friends Life t20 as they were beaten by Surrey at The PROBIZ County Ground, Hove today under the Duckworth/Lewis method.
Michael Yardy won the toss and Sussex elected to bat but once the customary handshakes had been completed infront of the Farnrise Indoor School, a heavy rain shower ensued and play was not to begin on time. It was around forty minutes later when Luke Wright and Chris Nash did take to the crease and the familiar carnage that the Sharks had been so familiar with across this South Group campaign continued as they hammered the Surrey bowlers to all parts of The PROBIZ.
They brought the 100 up off 9 overs before another heavy rain shower put a halt to proceedings. With no overs lost previously due to the extra hour that is available on Sunday afternoon matches but the rain soon came down again and play was unable to restart before 6.06pm and it was the Duckworth/Lewis method which handed Surrey a target of only 62 from five overs.
And Kevin Pietersen’s 36 from only 16 balls handed them victory with two deliveries remaining. There was no shortage of action though. Chris Liddle took two incredible catches; one in the first over, diving one-handed to his left at extra cover to take a one-handed effort before diving with two hands at long-on to dismiss Jason Roy who was aiming to clear the ropes.
Liddle also bowled Gary Wilson but Surrey brought up their target in the 5th over as Pietersen smashed a Luke Wright full toss into The PROBIZ Media Centre to seal victory. It brought to an end Sussex’s unbeaten run in the competition but it matters little as they head for a home quarter-final draw against Gloucestershire Gladiators after winning the South Group.
