REPORT: Sharks edged out in a thrilling finish with Hampshire

Harry Finch hit another half-century but the Sharks were narrowly defeated by Hampshire

Sussex were back in 50-over pre-season action today as they contested a tight affair with south coast rivals Hampshire at The 1st Central County Ground, who defeated the Sharks by one wicket in an exciting finale at Hove.

After Sussex won the toss and elected to bat first, the Sharks made 231 for 9 from their 50 overs. Harry Finch continued his rich vein of pre-season form by top-scoring with 58, whilst Michael Burgess made an unbeaten 50.

Will Beer fell a single short of his half-century and Danny Briggs (27) was the other main contributor in an innings where four Hampshire bowlers (Brad Wheal, Ryan Stevenson, Asher Hart and Ian Holland) all claimed two wickets apiece.

In response, experienced opening batsman Michael Carberry (15) and Jimmy Adams (12) both fell cheaply to George Garton and Jofra Archer respectively, but Rilee Rossouw and Liam Dawson (29) steadied the ship.

It looked as though Rossouw would steer Hampshire to victory as they surpassed the 200 mark for the loss of five wickets, but when the South African was run out by Finch for 79, the visitors went on to lose four wickets for only 20 runs.

But Hampshire crept over the line with 12 balls remaining as Lewis McManus (43 not out) steered them to the win. Archer (2 for 36) and Garton (2 for 56) were both amongst the wickets for the Sharks.

Hampshire are the opponents again tomorrow when attentions are turned to red-ball cricket, with 90 overs of practice for the upcoming Specsavers County Championship campaign. Play begins at 11.00am and both sides will bat for 45 overs. Entrance is FREE.
