REPORT: Sharks stroll into FL t20 quarter-finals03-Jul-2012
Sussex Sharks have sealed a place in the Friends Life t20 quarter-finals with victory over Surrey at the Kia Oval this evening.
After winning the toss and electing to field, the Sharks reduced Surrey at one stage to 46 for 4 with the wicket of Kevin Pietersen as Michael Yardy, Chris Liddle and Will Beer got amongst the hosts' batting line-up. Zander de Bruyn hit an unbeaten 30 from 35 deliveries but following wickets for both Michael Rippon and Amjad Khan, persistent rain meant that the Surrey innings was to come to an end at 106 for 6 from 16.2 overs.
This gave Sussex a revised target of 109 from 15 overs yet they didn't even need 12 of them as Chris Nash (22), Luke Wright (32, pictured), Matt Prior (25) and Murray Goodwin (18) all played with intent under the lights at the Oval to ensure the Sharks went through to the knockout stages with two South Group games still to play. Joe Gatting's six ended proceedings to seal a comfortable six-wicket win under the Duckworth/Lewis method.
The Sharks are top of the group by three points from Hampshire who they face on Friday at The Ageas Bowl (7.00pm) and should they avoid defeat against the Royals, then the quarter-final match will be coming to The PROBIZ County Ground, Hove, at the end of the month.
Surrey 106 for 6 (16.2 overs), Sussex Sharks 110 for 4 (11.4 overs). Sussex win by 6 wickets (D/L)
