REPORT: Sussex beaten as Mitchell century downs Sharks05-May-2013
Sussex Sharks were beaten by 91 runs today at The BrightonandHoveJobs.com County Ground as Worcestershire Royals upset the odds infront of a bumper Bank Holiday crowd at Hove.
With all tickets allocated for today’s fixture and given away free thanks to the partnership with sponsors LED Sport Europe, the gorgeous sunshine made for an excellent spectacle at Hove with a real buzz around the ground before start time.
Worcestershire won the toss and after electing to bat, amassed 245 for 9 from their 40 overs as skipper Daryl Mitchell played a real captain’s innings. His 107 came from 106 balls and he held the Royals’ batting together to reach their total.
The main partnership in their innings came between him and Thilan Samaraweera who with whom he put on 111 with the latter scoring 41. Chris Liddle was the pick of the bowlers for the Sharks, claiming 3 for 37 from his eight overs as well as running Mitchell out by kicking down the stumps when attempting a quick single (above).
In reply, Sussex never really got going and lost Luke Wells in the third over as he chipped Jack Shantry to Gareth Andrew at mid-off, becoming the first of three victims for the left-armer. Michael Yardy top-scored with 45 whilst skipper Ed Joyce scored 27 but the lack of real partnerships was the Sharks’ downfall as the visitors put on the pressure.
Liddle was the final man to in the 32nd over as he was bowled by Shantry as Worcestershire Royals won the match by 91 runs, with Sussex collapsing to 154 all out.
