STUMPS & HIGHLIGHTS: Sussex enjoy a good start to the new season on Day One06-Apr-2014
Sussex took the upper hand on Day One of the new LV=County Championship Division One season at The BrightonandHoveJobs.com County Ground today as they bowled out Middlesex for 105.
Play was delayed until 12.00pm due to the damp conditions and even when the action did get underway the aid of the floodlights had to be used. After winning the toss and electing to field Sussex made the most of the conditions and rolled out their opponents as Jon Lewis, on his competitive debut for the county, starred after lunch taking 4 for 34. His spell included taking England man Eoin Morgan’s stumps out of the ground for a golden duck.
He was well supported by the evergreen Steve Magoffin (3 for 21) who had the honour of taking Sussex’s first wicket of the 2014 season, snaring fellow Australian Chris Rogers for 4 caught in the gully by Steffan Piolet.
Ashar Zaidi picked up two wickets – one with his first delivery of the season, whilst James Anyon also claimed one scalp.
By the time play was abandoned for the day due to bad light at 5.40pm Sussex had reached 86 for 3 as Matt Prior (32) and Matt Machan (21) had put on 44 for the fourth wicket.
