REPORT: Sussex take late upper hand on emotional day at Hove

A late surge of wickets from Sussex put the hosts in the driving seat on Day Three of their LV=County Championship clash with Somerset at The PROBIZ County Ground, Hove this evening.

The visitors lost four wickets for only eight runs on another gorgeous late summer’s evening at Hove as Steve Magoffin weighed in with three in another fantastic late spell. Marcus Trescothick and Arul Suppiah had previously put on 147 for the first wicket to give Somerset a solid platform in their pursuit of 396 but when James Hildreth and Alex Barrow resume tomorrow morning they will still require 241 with Sussex only needing six wickets to seal the win.

Sussex added 122 today before they were eventually bowled out for 308, with Chris Nash adding 20 to his score to finish on 126. The script was written for the departing Murray Goodwin, who was 51 not out overnight, to bow out on his final innings at Hove with a century but clearly Alfonso Thomas didn’t receive a copy as the seamer drew him into a nick behind. Goodwin, who is leaving Sussex after 12 seasons, earned a rapturous reception from an excellent Hove crowd.

He was joined by his two children as he walked from the middle as a Sussex batsman at Hove for the final time and a presentation was made to mark the fantastic career of Goodwin during the luncheon interval.

With Warwickshire confirming the title earlier in the day against Worcestershire at New Road, Sussex knew they would only be playing for second place in this match and during next week’s trip to Durham, however another enthralling day is in store tomorrow and to mark the end of another season here at Hove, it will be FREE ADMISSION to all. Gates open at 9.00am and play begins at 10.30am.

Sussex 221 & 308, Somerset 134 & 155 for 4
