REPORT: Wells keeps Surrey at bay07-Apr-2012
Sussex number three Luke Wells struck an unbeaten 96 to deny Surrey an LV= County Championship Division One victory inside three days at the Kia Oval.
Rory Hamilton-Brown’s side could only add 23 to their overnight 250 for eight as Naveed Arif Gondal and James Anyon dismissed Stuart Meaker and Jon Lewis, who made 24 and 27 respectively.
Chasing 392, Sussex were soon reduced to 40 for three with Meaker, who finished the day with 3-75, dismissing experienced duo Ed Joyce and Murray Goodwin.
Jade Dernbach and Gareth Batty also claimed two victims apiece to take Surrey to the brink of their first win back in the top flight. But Wells denied Surrey with a defiant 224-ball innings that helped Sussex to reach 240 for eight by the time bad light ended the day’s play.Report courtesy of ecb.co.uk
