REPORT: Wright knock at right time sinks Yorkshire

Luke Wright smashed a stunning century for Sussex Sharks as they saw off Yorkshire Carnegie by four wickets in the Clydesdale Bank 40 this evening.

Making his first appearance at The PROBIZ County Ground, Hove, since July last year mainly due to injury, Wright hit 103 from only 95 balls including 10 fours and 2 sixes as the Sharks coasted to victory with 37 balls remaining.

On a balmy night in Hove, Sussex were set what looked like it could be a stiff target as Yorkshire made 238 for 9 from their 40 overs. Amjad Khan was the star of the show with the ball for Sussex, taking 3 for 51 from his 8 overs, whilst Chris Liddle and Chris Nash, bowling first change, took two wickets apiece. Andrew Gale, Gary Balance and Joe Root all made contributions of over 40 for the Tykes as everyone chipped in.

Nash’s 44 set the tone for the innings as Sussex really got off to a flyer in reply, having lost stand-in skipper Ed Joyce for a duck. The Irishman was captaining the side this evening due to Michael Yardy missing the match as a precautionary measure due to a finger injury sustained in the nets, although he should be fit for tomorrow’s LV=County Championship clash with Nottinghamshire.

The opener has nullified the threat of demon Australian bowler Mitchell Starc but Wright, batting at 3, really showed the Hove faithful what they had missed whilst he had been away though, pummelling the visiting attack to all parts of The PROBIZ. The game was already won with Sussex only needing four more runs from a mountain of overs when Adam Lyth threw the stumps down to run him out, but the whole ground stood to applaud the returning hero.
