SCB: Sports Personality of the Year

Alan Wildig, the Colts Manager of St Matthias CC, is the BBC Sports Personality of the Year - South East England Unsung Hero winner for 2011.

15th February 2012

The image shows him receiving his award from Chairman of the SCCT and Chairman of the Brighton & Hove City Cricket Development Group David Bowden at the Sussex University Sports Hall recently. The youngsters in the photos are from the club's Under 12s and 14s, who were receiving their regular coaching from Alan.

David Bowden said of Alan, "He has taken responsibility for helping to develop hundreds of youngsters with their cricketing skills many of who have progressed to County level.  At the same time he has held a number of leading posts within the Club and it is appropriate to state that, but for Alan's involvement the Club may not now exist.

"He is respected hugely by the children he coaches, by his Club colleagues and, even more impressively, by his peers in other clubs.

"He has always kept up-to-date with changing coaching methods and is very innovative in his attitude and approach to such matters.

At all times, Alan has remained incredibly modest about his many achievements and is most unassuming in his demeanor.  He does not seek recognition or reward and, therefore, fits superbly well into the category of "Unsung Hero".

One of the youngsters who received coaching from Alan whilst at St Matthias CC was none other than Matt Prior!
