SECOND ELEVEN: Back-to-back victories for Sussex over Oxfordshire

Will Beer skippered the Second Eleven to two one-day victories over Oxfordshire at the weekend

Sussex’s Second Eleven recorded two victories over the weekend as they entertained Oxfordshire, in two 50-over matches that took place at the Blackstone Academy Ground, sponsored by Hurstpierpoint College.

On Saturday, Sussex won the toss and after asking Oxfordshire to bat, they dismissed their visitors for 137. Skipper Will Beer claimed 3 for 21 and fellow leg-spinner Will Collard, of the Academy, took 3 for 26. Stuart Whittingham (2 for 18) and Ben Twine, also of the Academy, took 1 for 24.

Sussex lost seven wickets in their reply, reaching their target in the 41st over, with Academy all-rounder Tom Gordon top-scoring with an unbeaten 31.

In the second match on Sunday, Sussex made 218 for 9 from their 50 overs after winning the toss and electing to bat. Phil Salt top-scored with a brisk 45 from 31 deliveries, whilst Beer (39), George Garton (31 not out) and Tom Haines (29) were the other main contributors.

In response, Garton was also in fine form with the ball, claiming impressive figures of 3 for only 7 from five overs. Abi Sakande (2 for 11), Beer (2 for 15) and a wicket apiece for Whittingham and Danny Briggs saw Oxfordshire bowled out for 113 after 31 overs, sealing a 105-run victory for Sussex.

PLEASE NOTE - The two matches planned to take place at Blackstone this weekend against Guernsey have been CANCELLED – the Second Eleven will next be in action on Monday (24th April) when they face Essex at Billericay in the Second Eleven Trophy.
