SECOND ELEVEN: Cachopa half-century puts Sussex in driving seat

A half-century from Craig Cachopa put Sussex’s Second Eleven in the driving seat on the opening day of their two-day friendly match with Surrey, at The Blackstone Academy Ground, sponsored by Hurstpierpoint College.

After it was decided that this week’s match would take place over two days rather than three, due to the wet weather which the ground has experienced recently, visitors Surrey won the toss and elected to bat.

The leg-spin of Will Beer was the pick of the bowling for Sussex, taking 3 for 9, whilst there were also scalps for Tim Moses (3 for 65), Stuart Whittingham (2 for 54) and Lewis Hatchett (1 for 16). Gary Wilson (45) top-scored for Surrey after openers Zafar Ansari (25) and Dominic Sibley (24) had made starts, as the visitors were bowled out for 192.

In reply, opening pair Phil Salt (22) and Fynn Hudson-Prentice (23) both got starts but it was Cachopa (54) batting at number three who has top-scored so far in Sussex’s current total of 165 for 3. Trialist William Hale is unbeaten on 49.

Play is set to resume at 11.00am this morning at Blackstone and entrance is FREE.
