SECOND ELEVEN: Curtailed friendly sees Sussex victory

Sussex’s Second Eleven managed to grab victory in a much curtailed and changed three-day friendly against Surrey at the Sutton Winson Academy Ground in Blackstone yesterday.

With day one of the match on Monday being completely washed out, the sides agreed on playing an arranged 100 overs practice time for each remaining day, with Surrey batting 60 overs and Sussex batting 40 overs on Tuesday, whilst the roles were to be reversed in the final day.

Surrey took to the wicket again after 201 for 7 from 60 overs in their first innings. It was agreed that they would bat until 85 overs (25 overs on the day) and reached 113 for 3 declared as their skipper Matthew Spriegel once again hit a half-century. There was a wicket each for Will Beer and youngsters John Glover and Elliott Hooper.

Sussex then went back out to bat and resumed their innings for another 42 overs and eventually surpassed Surrey’s score. Andy Hodd, opening the batting, made 40 whilst Matt Machan who came in at three retired out after his knock of 58 so that Callum Jackson (19), who had worn the gloves instead of Hodd in the second innings could have some time at the wicket.

Beer also made an unbeaten 37 as Sussex reached 170 for 4 and the match was ended, a fair few overs short of the full 100 in the day due to bad light and poor weather.
