SECOND ELEVEN: Last wicket stand so nearly leads Sussex to victory17-Jul-2014
The Sussex Second Eleven were edged out by 32 runs in their Championship match with Northamptonshire this week, at Finedon Dolben CC.
After the hosts resumed on 80 for 4 on Thursday morning, a lead of 168 runs over Sussex, they went on to reach 167 for 8 before declaring. Fynn Hudson-Prentice (pictured) was the pick of the bowlers as he claimed 3 for 22.
That set Sussex a target of 256 to win the match and they were bowled out only 32 runs of the stiff target. Ashar Zaidi made the top contribution of the upper order, making 31, whilst skipper Jon Lewis chipped in with 24.
But it was a last-wicket stand of 87 between Sam Grant (65) and Stuart Whittingham (44 not out) that so nearly got Sussex over the line, however the final wicket fell with Sussex still 32 runs short of the total despite the heroic effort.
The Second Team are next in action from Tuesday onwards at The BrightonandHoveJobs.com County Ground. Play is set to begin at 11.00am and entrance is of course FREE
