SECOND ELEVEN: One win one loss as t20 tournament begins11-Jun-2013
Honours were shared yesterday in the Second Eleven t20 tournament as Sussex won one match and lost the other against their neighbours Hampshire at the Nursery Ground of The Ageas Bowl.
In the first match of the day, Sussex made 157 for 6 from their 20 overs as trialist Nathan Hawkes (71 not out) and Fynn Hudson-Prentice (44) were the main contributors to the innings. In reply, the hosts reached their target with slightly more than one over to spare, as Michael Roberts (70) and Sean Terry (60 not out) led their side to victory. Rory Hamilton-Brown and Michael Rippon took a wicket apiece for the visitors.
But Sussex really took out revenge on Hampshire in the second match, comfortably winning by nine wickets with nine overs to spare too. The hosts batted first in this encounter and made 165 for 7 as Matt Machan’s impressive figures of 4 for 26 were the highlight of the bowling analysis, along with a wicket each for Hudson-Prentice and Harry Finch.
And it wasn’t only the ball that Machan (pictured) did the damage with as he smashed 72 from only 38 balls, whilst Joe Gatting’s incredible 70 from just 25 balls, which included seven sixes, sealed the win for Sussex in only 49 minutes.
Match One: Sussex 157 for 6 (20.0 overs), Hampshire 159 for 2 (18.4 overs)
Match Two: Hampshire 165 for 7 (20.0 overs), Sussex 168 for 1 (11.0 overs)
