SECOND ELEVEN: Strong mix of teams win one and lose one against Hampshire

Luke Wright warmed-up well for the NatWest T20 Blast with a century against Hampshire

A strong Sussex Second Eleven played two T20 games against an also strong Hampshire outfit yesterday at The BrightonandHoveJobs.com County Ground yesterday, claiming one victory and also suffering a defeat in windy but sunny conditions at Hove.

In the first match of the day, Hampshire asked Sussex to bat who made 219 for 3 from their 20 overs which was mainly led by 109 from 48 balls from this season’s NatWest T20 Blast skipper Luke Wright. He and Chris Nash, who hit an unbeaten 87 from 60 balls, put on 160.

In reply, Hampshire made 156 for 7 as Chris Liddle (2 for 17 from 4 overs) and Ashar Zaidi (2 for 20 from 3 overs) restricted their progress. Steffan Piolet, Will Beer and trialist Adnan Ghaus also picked up a wicket apiece.

In the second game, again with many Sussex and Hampshire first-team players in action, the visitors made 187 for 3 after winning the toss and batting. Trialist Peter Burgoyne took two wickets for the Sharks with Ollie Robinson claiming the other. Adam Wheater top-scored for Hampshire with an unbeaten 69, whilst Michael Carberry made 42.

In reply, Sussex’s Academy prospect Phil Salt was the star of the innings making 61 from 44 balls and whilst there were contributions from Craig Cachopa (20), Ben Brown (22), Ajmal Shahzad (20) and Michael Yardy (20 not out), Sussex were beaten by 23 runs.

Match One: Sussex 219 for 3, Hampshire 156 for 7. Sussex win by 63 runs
Match Two: Hampshire 187 for 3, Sussex 164 for 7. Hampshire win by 23 runs

The Sussex Second Eleven are next in action on Monday 11th May when they take on the MCC at High Wycombe in a similar two-match T20 format (11.30am start).

Sussex are also in action today (Wednesday 6th May) as they play a Combined Sussex/League XI at Hove. The match is set to begin at 12pm and entrance is FREE. It will be the first chance for Sharks fans to catch a glimpse of Sri Lankan overseas star Mahela Jayawardene.
