SECOND ELEVEN: Strong start to Championship match in Somerset23-May-2013
Sussex’s Second Eleven moved into a strong position on Day One of their Second Eleven Championship as they reached 341 for 5 declared against Somerset at Taunton Vale Sports Ground.
They were once again led by their trialists as Bilal Shafayat (76) and Nitesh Patel (61) both made runs opening the batting. Nathan Hawkes followed up his century in the Trophy match on Tuesday with a knock of 45 and Ben Raine, formerly of Durham, chipped in with 23.
Skipper Will Beer was unbeaten on 63 when time was called on the innings as Michael Rippon, who had put on 116 with the leg-spinner, was snared by Craig Meschede.
Amjad Khan (pictured) grabbed two wickets before the close of play as Somerset ended the day on 24 for 2, a total of 317 runs behind the visitors.
